Latex è un sistema per creare articoli, libri, tesi in modo non wysiwyg, cioè non lavorando direttamente sul risultato, ma scrivendo il codice sorgente. Può sembrare scomodo farlo, ma vi assicuro che lavorare sulla scrittura di un documento di qualche decina di pagine con immagini, layout di colonna, titoli di paragrafo e tanti stili può diventare problematico: problemi di word / openoffice nella gestione (lentezza, blocchi o aumento della dimensione del file inspiegabile), difficoltà e scomodità di utilizzo, problemi di uniformità di stili, bigliografia, elenchi figure, ecc…
L’utilizzo di software di questo tipo è praticamente indispensabile nella stesura di libri, giornali, documenti scientifici ecc..
Con appositi (gratuiti) programmi basta un click per creare il file risultante (ps o pdf), che corrisponde esattamente al codice che abbiamo scritto.
In ambiente linux basta procurarsi i relativi pacchetti, in ambiente windows ci sono invece diverse soluzioni.
Propongo di seguito una soluzione composta da programmi free e i relativi siti dove reperirli.
Ambiente Latex:
Scaricate l’ambiente miktex
http://miktex.org/
Questo contiene il motore di latex e varie librerie, cioè il compilatore di file sorgenti (.tex) in file PDF/PS e altri.
Attualmente alla versione 2.6. Contiene tutti i tools necessari per il parsing e compilazione dei files TEX sorgenti.
Ad esempio pdflatex.exe converte file .TEX in .PDF
Dopo l’installazione, dal menu avvio lanciare l’utility per i settaggi e impostare la lingua italiana (per il correttore ortografico), verrà scaricato il pacchetto e verranno ricompilati alcuni files dell’ambiente.
Visualizzatore PDF:
se non lo avete già, usate acrobat reader o il più veloce, semplice e sempre gratuito FoxItReader

Editor TEX e configurazione:
Trovate tantissimi editor specifici per latex, freeware e non. Consiglio di usare SciTe, un editor basato sul progetto Open/source Scintilla (http://www.scintilla.org/), completamente configurabile e già completo di evidenziatore di codice per i file sorgenti di latex.
Consiglio la versione modificata da R.Rossi: RScite (http://rsoftware.altervista.org).
Aprite il file tex.properties nella cartella di RScite, andate alla riga che inizia con "command.go" (sotto file.patterns relativa alla estensione dei file .tex) e modificate così:
command.go.$(file.patterns.tex)=gv $(FileName).pdf
command.go.needs.$(file.patterns.tex)=pdflatex $(FileNameExt)
Così, quando aprite un file sorgente latex (file di testo con estensione .tex) con RScite, basta premere F7 per compilare, oppure F5 per compilare e visualizzare il file PDF.
Nota: la cartella con gli eseguibili di miktex (C:\Programmi\MiKTeX 2.6\miktex\bin) deve essere aggiunta al path di windows, in modo che pdflatex.exe venga trovato, controllate che il path sia installato dopo aver installato miktex. Sostituite gv con il percorso assoluto del visualizzatore pdf, oppure (consigliato per evitare problemi di path) copiate l’eseguibile di fox it reader con il nome gv.exe nella cartella bin di miktex (o in una altra cartella nel path di windows).
Carico qua il file tex.properties (testato per Scite 1.72).
Visualizzare file PS:
Se preferite utilizzare/aprire file PS (PostScript ) scaricate e installate GsView dal sito
http://www.cs.wisc.edu/~ghost/gsview/
Si tratta di un visualizzatore di file PostScript (PS), che usa le librerie Ghostscript (da scaricare dal medesimo sito, necessarie per GsView). Non è necessario per l’utilizzo di latex, ma è uno dei pochi software per windows per visualizzare file PS.
